Cornerstone Security: A Full-Service Solution for your Security Needs

When building a thriving business in the security industry, it takes more than technical expertise—it also takes resilience, adaptability, and a systematic approach to success. We talked to Andrew Waugh, Director and owner of Cornerstone Security about how he transformed his one-man operation into a trusted business in the security field.
The early days
Andrew’s previous career as a video editor and camera operator led him to crossover to the security industry.
“I had a friend that had started a security business who was getting lots of CCTV enquiries at the time. In 2006 I started off working with him part time, but it quickly grew into a full-time role. After four years a sudden medical event meant the business had to close and I had to make a decision: either find another job or take a leap of faith and start my own business” says Andrew.
“I was a man in a van for the first six or seven years doing everything from alarms to large CCTV systems & gate motors. I learned the industry from the ground up and it was a steep learning curve.”
“When you’re working in a larger company, there’s always someone else to handle parts of the puzzle. When you’re on your own, you have to understand all the pieces and figure it out for yourself.”
But that knowledge enabled Andrew to systematically build up both his knowledge and business systems so he had a robust base when he started bringing on staff, which has grown to a business of seven full-time staff today, with more planned in 2025.

Building a Comprehensive Security Service
Cornerstone Security prides itself on being a full-service security systems partner. Unlike smaller firms that may specialize in one or two services, Cornerstone Security offer the full range of solutions, from alarms, access control, and CCTV systems to intercoms, automated gates, pedestrian doors, and vehicle roller grilles.
Their holistic approach has made them a go-to for property managers and business owners who value having all their security needs met under one roof.
“The benefit is clear,” Andrew explains. “If a gate’s not opening and closing properly, or at the right times, the gate technician might say it’s the access control, and vice versa. We eliminate that scenario by managing each system so we have visibility of exactly how they should be integrated.”
For customers, this integrated approach means their systems—whether cameras, alarms, or gates—are designed to work in harmony, offering both efficiency and reliability.
In the Access Control space Cornerstone’s Gallagher Channel Partnership ensures top-tier support and integration for high level users. A prime example of their expertise is their work for Quadrant Properties, a design/build/lease landlord in the logistics premises industry, where they have integrated access control, CCTV, vehicle gates, and barrier arms across multiple sites giving the client the consistency and reliability they need to operate effectively.
“When we were discussing systems for their last site, it was a pretty quick conversation, they said, ‘Just do what you did at the other locations.’ That trust comes from delivering exceptional results.”
Leveraging Technology and Expertise
The rapid evolution of technology has played a pivotal role in Cornerstone Security’s success.
“Back in 2010, it was basic alarms and access control. Now, with systems becoming ever more powerful, we can tailor advanced solutions specifically for a client’s needs.”
“A good CCTV camera in 2010 was analog, half a megapixel, and cost $700. Today, an eight-megapixel AI camera is $550. The advancements in quality and affordability are mind-blowing.”
The integration of AI, particularly for intrusion detection and video verification, has further revolutionized their offerings.
“Active deterrent systems, for instance, can play pre-recorded messages or trigger sirens when someone breaches a perimeter. Effective security systems are now about preventing damage, not reacting after the fact.”
Cornerstone is not just about installing systems; they want to empower their clients.
“We are here to ensure clients maximise the full value of their security systems. If you learn how to use a system properly, you’ll use it more. That’s why we maintain our own inhouse training resources for both our technicians and client’s use.”
Local Roots, Wide Reach
While based in Wiri Station Business Park, Cornerstone’s influence extends across Auckland and beyond.
“We specifically wanted to invest in a brand-new facility as we expect to be here for a long time. Our location was strategic. It allows easy access to all directions—west, east, north, and south.”
With a significant portion of their business serving high-rise apartment buildings and central city clients, Cornerstone has cemented its reputation as a trusted partner for property managers and councils alike.
