If you’re looking for a sign…..get noticed with WiPath Communications

What do LED signs and Pagers have in common?

Both are electronic communication devices produced and supported by local Wiri business, WiPath Communications.

Managing Director Walid Hadi is joined by Namo Naicker, Praveen Kumar and Lulu Zhang to make up the team behind the tech. They’ve been based in the Wiri Station Business park since January 2021.

Early Beginnings

WiPath Communications started off in 1993, having bases in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and China, with independent distributors in various other countries.

In the beginning, they specialised in developing and manufacturing innovative electronic critical messaging equipment, including wireless messaging and paging products, marketed globally.

Around a decade later, they started integrating paging systems with indoor LED signage, marking the start of their journey into LED signage solutions.

Why pagers in the world of mobile?

Though smartphones and tablets are more widespread than ever, pagers are still being used in the emergency response, healthcare and hospitality fields.

The reason being they have an independent network with built in redundancy plans, are reliable, and affordable.

“As long as there is power available to the transmitter (and many locations will have more than one transmitter onsite, and use external power sources), messages can be sent. These are independent networks with security cap codes and frequencies, so only select people can receive messages” explains Praveen, Electronics Engineering Technician.

Over the years, WiPath Communications has developed custom paging solutions for ports, steel factories, courts, casinos, restaurants and hospitals, and often integrated indoor LED signage into these solutions acting as a large pager. Their continued support and parts supply for older products, along with remote access, make them a standout choice for paging solutions.

The evolution to LED signage

Static signage gets stale quickly, however digital signage stands out in any space. It’s a powerful tool to enhance marketing and promote businesses.

WiPath Communications quickly saw the benefits to their customers and pivoted to offer outdoor signage solutions. They provide LED signage for a range of organisations, including schools and churches.

“A digital sign can effectively promote local events, services, and community initiatives, reaching a broader audience with dynamic, eye-catching advertisements” says Praveen.

What started with their first Electronic outdoor LED signs at Westlake Boys High School and Blockhouse Bay School in 2009; has since grown to over 400 school signs across New Zealand.

Their signage solutions have expanded further to encompass petrol stations, along with carparks, video walls and scoreboards.

“We have supplied over 2000 gas price signs for petrol stations across New Zealand including Caltex, Z Energy and Allied Petroleum”.

“Our technology is always improving, and we are working on developing more advanced digital displays and scoreboards. The pixels have decreased from P10 mm Pixel Pitch to 3.9. However, as all our signs are custom designed, we provide a range of specs depending on what the client’s requirements are” and the only Electronic Signage supplier to have 10 year parts availability for all signs supplied to the industry.

Where in the world will you see WiPath Communications signs and pagers?

WiPath Communications is a global company, offering solutions and continued support to a range of clients worldwide.

In New Zealand, the signage market is key to WiPath Communications. Some of their more well-known clients include Ministry of Education, Ports of Auckland, Air New Zealand, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Coastguard, Sports Clubs, Ministry of Justice and Skycity Casino.

Over in North America pagers are their biggest market, processing between 300-500 orders per year for the US alone. They have created paging solutions for the tram networks in Canada, fire trucks across the US and Australia, pager around the UK and EU and within the ports in South Carolina, Georgia, Mexico, Manzanillo, and Panama.

How a pager works

Transmitters in the paging networks broadcast signals over a specific frequency. Pagers that are physically in range of the transmitters listen to the signal from the transmitter. When your pager hears its unique address, it receives the message and alerts you (via an audible signal and/or a vibration, depending on pager settings).

Why less is more....in pixel pitch

Pixel pitch (also referred to as “dot pitch”), is a method of measuring pixel density, calculated as the distance, in millimetres, between the centre of 2 pixels on an LED display board. It is written in the form of p(mm).
