WiriLink recently sat down to interview Deane Shaftoe (General Manager) and Bo Gilbert (Machinery Maintenance Plus) from Process Solutions Group (PSG). As leaders in process and packaging equipment supply, PSG has united three specialised companies under its umbrella: Proquip, Thermaflo, and Machinery Maintenance Plus (MMP). Proquip Solutions focuses on providing cutting-edge process and packaging equipment, representing top European and Canadian suppliers as well as a range of economy equipment. These solutions cater to the intricate needs of food processing, fresh produce handling, and packaging.

“Our focus is on all aspects of food & beverage processing. We’re also exploring other sectors, delivering end-to-end solutions that future-proof businesses and enable growth,” says Deane.

A unique aspect of Proquip’s approach is its dedication to repurposing used equipment. The company offers global platforms to find new homes for decommissioned machinery.

Proquip’s asset management services extend to site decommissioning, ensuring seamless transitions for large-scale operations. From dismantling plants to demolishing sites, the team ensures that no resource goes to waste.

“One man’s junk is another man’s gold. In the past, we’ve repurposed machinery from producers such as Fonterra – it’s great from a sustainability point of view.”

Thermaflo: Innovators in Food & Beverage Process

Based in Palmerston North, Thermaflo specialises in designing and manufacturing systems and equipment for heating, cooling, and processing liquid foods. Their expertise spans dairy, juice/beverage, sauces, wine & beer, petfood, CIP Kitchens, and general food processing.

“We started off in 1992 building pasteurisers for dairy processing. We’ve since expanded into almost any process where liquid foods or beverages are produced (like milk or juice), or food products that have a liquid component in the manufacturing process, like butter, jams/sauces, cheese, mayonnaise, plant-based dairy alternatives, or ice cream”.

With a team that includes process engineers, stainless steel fabricators, industrial electricians, automation engineers and project managers. Thermaflo offer the best of both worlds – a wealth of design and process knowledge and practical, hands-on experience in fabricating, installing and commissioning equipment

The missing piece of the puzzle: The acquisition of Machinery Maintenance Plus

“For years, PSG operated without robust after-sales service,” shares Deane. “When I joined over two years ago, we prioritized building this capability, which culminated in the acquisition of Machinery Maintenance Plus in 2024.”

MMP specializes in precision maintenance and engineering solutions tailored to the food and beverage sector. With a team driven by innovation and problem-solving, MMP ensures that client operations run at peak efficiency.

“The acquisition of MMP brought historic knowledge, established systems, and a loyal customer base. This foundation has allowed us to elevate our service capabilities significantly.”

Bo Gilbert, a passionate engineer and previous owner of MMP, brings his team of experts to the group to ensure PSG provides a seamless experience from design to installation.

MMP’s services go beyond reactive maintenance. The team adopts a proactive, 360-degree approach, analysing underlying issues that impact profitability.

“It’s not just about fixing a breakdown,” Bo explains. “We identify why the machine failed and where we can add value to improve overall performance.”

A People-Oriented Approach

Across each business, PSG fosters a culture rooted in passion, innovation, and care for its people. “We love what we do,” says Bo. “Nothing excites us more than seeing a plant run smoothly, knowing we played a part in that success.”

This people-first philosophy, driven by the directors, Kevin Gilbert & Mark Dykes, extends to all staff across the group.
