Update on Truck Parking
Over the past year, the Wiri Business Association (WBA) has received increasing reports from members about the negative impacts of truck parking in the Wiri Business District.
In early May, WBA held a with meeting with Auckland Transport (AT) representatives and local business stakeholders to discuss these concerns.
Several key concerns were raised during the session:
- Trucks parking at night without required red safety lights, creating serious visibility and safety risks.
- Congestion caused by trucks parked in inappropriate areas, particularly affecting business access, parking for clients/staff and traffic flow.
- Encroachment into driveways, creating a health and safety risks for drivers and pedestrians.
- The effect on the environment caused by lack of toilets and rubbish bins, with waste being disposed of in the street or road.
- Additional truck activities taking place on the road such as maintenance and repairs and washing trucks; and waste inevitably is ending up in our waterways.
- Need for stronger enforcement, with AT confirming multiple and regular infringements have been issued since Christmas for lighting violations.
- Responsibility of companies and drivers, with discussion around the role both play in ensuring vehicles are parked safely and legally.
Our next steps
Following the meeting, the WBA is committed to taking the following actions:
- Continue to collect further feedback from businesses on specific problem areas and experiences.
- Continue working with Auckland Transport to push for improved enforcement and long-term infrastructure solutions.
- Advocate with Auckland Council for the development of suitable truck parking facilities that meet driver needs and community standards.
- Reach out to Government representatives to make them aware of these issues and gain support for progressing solutions.
- Engage with transport operators to encourage more responsible parking practices among their drivers.
- Working with other Business Improvement Districts to find out their experiences and gain traction on this issue.
