How to use AI as your own marketing assistant
By Seth Zorn from The Classroom
Ask anyone what one of the biggest leaps in technology over the last decade has been, and they’ll probably say AI. And when it comes to marketing you’ve probably heard that it can save you significant time and make your life a whole lot easier.
But most businesses we talk to still aren’t quite sure how AI fits into their day-to-day marketing. They know it’s powerful, and they know they should probably be using it. They’re just not sure where it actually helps.
One of the simplest and most effective ways to think about AI is this: it’s your marketing assistant.
Not your marketing manager. Not your strategist. And definitely not your brand voice.
Instead, it’s an assistant that can help you research, draft, refine, and generate ideas faster than ever before.
Used this way, AI becomes incredibly practical.
Where AI helps most in marketing
AI is particularly good at handling the parts of marketing that take time and mental energy, but don’t always require deep strategic thinking.
For example, it can help you:
- Draft social media posts from a rough idea
- Turn your notes into a well-written email
- Create blog outlines around a specific topic
- Rewrite content in a different tone
- Summarise long information into something clearer
- Generate variations of headlines and messages.
These are tasks many business owners either procrastinate on or find slow and draining. AI removes a lot of that friction.
Instead of staring at a blank screen, you start with a draft. And editing a draft is always easier than starting from scratch.
How to actually use AI day-to-day
The most effective businesses aren’t using AI occasionally. They’re weaving it into their normal workflow.
That might look like:
- Jotting down a rough idea for a post, then asking AI to turn it into three caption options
- Pasting bullet points from a meeting and asking AI to turn them into an email
- Sharing a paragraph from your website and asking AI to simplify it
- Giving AI a topic and asking for five angles you could talk about
In each case, you’re still directing the thinking. AI is just helping you execute faster.
That’s the key shift: AI works best when you bring the intent, and it brings the speed.

What AI should not be doing
While AI is a powerful assistant, it still needs clear direction and human oversight.
It doesn’t know your customers like you do. It doesn’t understand your positioning automatically. And it won’t naturally sound like your brand unless you guide it.
This is why simply asking AI to “write a social post about my business” often produces something generic. But when you provide context – your audience, your message, your tone – the output becomes far more useful.
Think of it like briefing a human assistant. The clearer the brief, the better the result.
The edit is where the value happens
One of the biggest mindset shifts with AI is understanding that the first output is rarely the finished product. The real value comes from shaping it.
You adjust wording so it sounds like you. You add specifics from your business.
You remove anything that feels generic. You tweak the message to match your intent.
This is where your brand voice and judgement come back in. AI gives you a strong starting point, but you still own the final message.
Why this matters for busy business owners
Most business owners don’t struggle with ideas. They struggle with time and execution.
Marketing often sits on the to-do list because it feels like it requires long, focused
blocks of effort. AI changes that. Tasks that once took an hour can often be completed in minutes.
That doesn’t just increase output. It increases consistency. And consistent marketing is what builds visibility and trust over time.
AI doesn’t replace marketing effort. But it lowers the barrier to doing it regularly.
The opportunity ahead
Used well, AI can function as a practical, everyday marketing assistant, helping businesses communicate more clearly and more often without increasing workload.
But like any assistant, it works best when guided by clear direction. Businesses that understand their audience, message, and positioning will always get more value from AI than those relying on it to figure things out for them.
The most effective approach is simple – you bring the strategy and intent, and AI helps with the execution. AI isn’t here to replace your marketing but when used well it can make it much easier.
