Cable Systems: From a One-Man Van to a Nationwide Network

Cable Systems has built a reputation not through flashy marketing, but through decades of steady work, great service, and long-standing relationships. WiriLink chatted with Managing Director, Ben Thompson about the early days and how they have steadily grown over nearly four decades.

Since its beginnings in 1988, Cable Systems has evolved alongside the rapid transformation of technology – growing from a small electrical operation into a multi-service provider supporting businesses across New Zealand.

At its core, Cable Systems specialises in structured cabling, the backbone of modern communication systems.

“The biggest part of our business is installing data cables for computers, Wi-Fi and CCTV systems” Ben explains.

“Over time, that core service has expanded to include wireless networking, CCTV systems, access control, audio-visual setups, and general electrical work. Today, the company operates firmly in the business-to-business space, offering end-to-end solutions that allow clients to rely on a single provider rather than juggling multiple contractors.”

Humble beginnings in a changing industry

The story begins with “Uncle Ron,” the founder who launched Cable Systems after a previous business partnership dissolved.

What could have been a setback became an opportunity. While working with an early IT client, he was asked a simple question: could he install data cabling?

“He said, ‘Yeah, no worries… what is that?’” Ben recalls.

At the time, data cabling was still in its infancy, with bulky mainframe computers and basic terminals dominating workplaces. But that willingness to say yes and to learn and adapt, set the tone for the company’s future.

From those early days, Cable Systems carved out a niche in data infrastructure. As technology evolved, from wired networks to Wi-Fi, and later to integrated security systems, the business evolved with it.

The core of Cable Systems

Since its beginnings in 1988, Cable Systems has evolved alongside the rapid transformation of technology – growing from a small electrical operation into a multi-service provider supporting businesses across New Zealand.

At its core, Cable Systems specialises in structured cabling, the backbone of modern communication systems.

“The biggest part of our business is installing data cables for computers, Wi-Fi and CCTV systems” Ben explains.

From apprentice to owner

Ben joined just months after the business began, straight out of school.

“It was just Ron in his van at the time, and he reached out to see if I wanted to come and work for him. Mum said, ‘Go get your School C and then you can do the job’. I scraped through that and never looked back”.

Starting as an apprentice, he worked his way up, eventually becoming part owner and later taking over when Ron retired. That cycle has continued, with newer team members stepping into leadership roles over time.

“Ryan Grant, Business Development Manager became my apprentice, and now is a part owner of Cable Systems. One day, maybe he’ll take over.”

This internal succession model reflects a belief that those who understand the business best are the ones who’ve grown within it. It also contributes to strong staff retention, with some employees staying for over a decade.

A nationwide presence from their local base in Wiri

Though now based at 3/6 Earl Richardson Ave after relocating from Penrose two years ago, Cable Systems operates far beyond South Auckland. With clients across the country and even staff in Christchurch the company offers consistent service nationwide. This is a major drawcard for businesses with multiple locations.

“Instead of calling another company, they can call us. Businesses know they can get the same standard of work, no matter where they are in the country.”

While services have expanded, the company’s philosophy has remained consistent.

“Customers are a privilege, and we’ll treat them as such.”

That mindset shapes everything from how staff interact with clients to how mistakes are handled.

“We’ve been doing cabling since 1988, but sometimes we make mistakes. All our guys are told, if you make a mistake, you own it, fix it, and communicate it.”

“We must be doing something right as most of our big customers have been with us over 20 or 30 years”

Growing through relationships, not advertising

You won’t find them on Facebook – Cable Systems has grown almost entirely through word of mouth. Their approach is simple: do good work, build trust, and let relationships expand naturally.

“Growth is like a tree. Each satisfied customer becomes a new branch, leading to more opportunities. But the reverse is also true, poor service can cut off future growth entirely. If we do a bad job, then we can forget about all of that potential business, which could span years.”

This long-term view shapes decision-making. Whether it’s absorbing a small cost or going the extra mile at the end of a long day, the focus is always on future relationships rather than immediate gain. “Do what’s right, not what’s easy,” is a mantra repeated often within the team.
