H2-Oh! Bluestar Water making a splash in the water market

Bluestar Water was founded in 2020 from a lightbulb moment sparked by a simple household frustration. WiriLink chatted to Shazia Edwards, The Manager at Bluestar Water about their cool beginnings, how they’ve grown and how they came to the Wiri Business District.

Founder Johny Bhandari was quick to spot the growing issues with bottled water – the rising costs, the environmental damage, and the constant hassle of boiling water for everyday use.

“He just thought there had to be a better way, something more sustainable, more affordable, and easier for everyday families” says Shazia.

From that spark, a business was born. Johny’s vision was clear: to create a solution that would ease the burden on families and businesses alike. The machines are leased on a simple weekly payment, $14.99 for homes, with discounted rates for businesses. Installation, servicing, and maintenance are all included.

“Service callouts are free. Even if a customer’s issue turns out to be something small, like a power cut, we’ll still come out and reset it for them. We don’t charge for that. If it’s a bigger issue that can’t be fixed quickly, we offer temporary machines to maintain the customer’s supply. What we promise, we deliver.”

Under Johny’s leadership, Bluestar Water’s purifiers have evolved beyond just being a convenient solution. They’re designed to be sustainable and cost-effective offering a smarter solution for both your wallet and the planet.

“Bottled water keeps getting more expensive. But our weekly price has remained the same over the years.”

Bluestar Water’s machines offer seven stages of filtration, providing both hot and cold water at the push of a button.

For families, it’s an easy way to encourage healthier habits and for businesses, it’s a way to offer staff and customers purified water without constantly ordering bottles of water.

Bluestar Water officially launched in 2021, right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic – hardly an easy time to start a business. With lockdowns and restrictions, they couldn’t deliver their water purifiers in person at first.

“People were ordering machines, but we couldn’t deliver them. We quickly had to adapt to contactless delivery and guided customers over video calls on how to set them up. Everyone pitched in; I even learned how to install the machines!”

This adaptability and spirit of teamwork, all fuelled by Johny’s unwavering leadership and vision, became the backbone of Bluestar Water. From one-person crew (Johny) Bluestar Water has since expanded into a bigger team, including technicians, sales reps, and customer support staff.

“We’re lucky to have such an amazing team. Everyone’s been hands-on since day one, our people are the reason we’ve come this far.”

The team is based on 30 Noel Burnside Road in Wiri, with the location being both practical and strategic.

“Cost was a big consideration; we needed something affordable. As we service the Auckland region, we like Wiri for its central location, being close to the motorway. It’s clean, convenient and safe. It’s turned out to be perfect for us.”

Bluestar Water has some big ambitions to grow over the next few years, and it’s not just limited to water purifiers.

“Within five years, we want to cover the North Island. And within ten to fifteen, we’d love to expand to the South Island. We know it’s a big goal, but we believe in what we’re doing.”

Innovation is key to the team; they want to ensure their product stays relevant to their customers. They are currently developing a new model of machine inspired by feedback from their business clients.

The goal is to provide exceptional customer service, ensuring that businesses and homeowners alike have a reliable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective water solution at their fingertips.
